“Formal dress” generally refers to the highest standard of dress code, often required for ceremonial or very upscale occasions. What it entails depends slightly on the context (e.g., Western, diplomatic, military), but here’s a breakdown of the most common Western formal dress standards:
For Men:
Black Tie (Standard Formal)
• Tuxedo or dinner jacket (black or midnight blue)
• Black formal trousers
• White formal shirt (usually with a pleated or marcella front)
• Black bow tie
• Black patent leather shoes
• Optional: cummerbund or waistcoat
For Women:
Black Tie
• Evening gown or elegant cocktail dress (usually floor-length or mid-calf)
• Dressy heels or flats
• Subtle but refined jewelry and evening bag
• More relaxed than white tie but still elegant
Diplomatic or Cultural Variants
In diplomatic or international contexts, formal dress may also include:
• National dress (if representing one’s country)
• Military dress uniform
• Medals, sashes, and orders of merit
• Formal cultural attire (like a kimono, sari, etc.) is often accepted or encouraged in international settings
Can I pay by card or do I need cash while I'm in Uganda?
Having cash is never wrong when travelling to any country (USD in Uganda or the local currency UGX Ugandan Shillings).
There are ATMs at the airport as you leave the arrival/security area and just before you leave the terminal. They take VISA and Mastercard.
Payment by card is often available at big hotels (like the Brovad Sands), bigger restaurants and most supermarkets that have a till.
For transportation/taxi and different activities, you may need to pay with cash. Uber and Bolt allow you to choose a connected card as the payment method.
Cash is king!
